In 1966, two fresh-faced surfers starred in the iconic surf film The Endless Summer, travelling the globe in search of the perfect wave. If you haven’t watched it, you should!
What they were really looking for… was Costa Rica. They just didn’t know it yet. Because here in Guanacaste, the water is warm, the waves roll in like clockwork, and you don’t need a wetsuit thick enough to survive the North Sea.

Playa Negra is the show-off sibling. Famous for its fast, hollow waves, this world-class reef break has appeared in surf competitions and glossy magazines. It’s best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers — the ones who casually say things like “barrel” and “line-up.” Even if you’re not surfing it yourself, it’s worth visiting just to watch the pros do their thing while you sip something cold and nod knowingly. “Ah yes… lovely left.”

🌊 Playa Avellanas — Surf, Sand & A Bit of Style
A short drive away, Playa Avellanas delivers consistent waves and multiple breaks. There’s even a section called “Little Hawaii” — which sounds terrifying but is actually brilliant to watch.
This is the kind of beach where:
• The surf is pumping
• The sand stretches forever
• Everyone looks annoyingly fit and happy… Surf, snack, repeat.
